Deep South Itinerary Trip ll 2023

Fourteen fabulous days, ferrying from island to island, flat to flat with a crew of hard working seaman, determined guides and six excited anglers seeking what the deep south of Sudan has to offer. This, in a cone shell, was the story of Wild Sea Expedition’s second trip navigating the Deep South islands of the Sudanese Red Sea.

The first week of the trip was blessed with fairly stable weather, a few overcast days making sight fishing quite tough, however a subtle south wind was present allowing cooler water to filter over the flats and promote fish movement, bait schooling and feeding frenzies. We saw a healthy number of trigger fish on various islands, and the guys capitalized as best they could with some good size titans and yellow margins coming to hand. Some of the bigger triggers showed signs of absolute aggression, chasing off other intruding reef fish, resulting in one being landed on a NYAP! Overall the triggers were slightly less desirable for our guests and the focus was shifted towards predatory fish and in particular the infamous Giant Trevally.

As the itinerary pushed through, so too did the south wind. We witnessed a few days of howling wind making flats fishing fairly frustrating. But the guys fished hard, wading outer reefs, often on the rougher side of the island, and staking out points with strong currents ripping through. This strategy, somewhat quite straining, resulted in a good number of GTs being seen. The guys had plenty of shots, some not all going to plan, but were rewarded with eleven bad boys in the bag! Special mention of Matt who had a session of a lifetime, landing two consecutive Bohar Snapper followed by a double pairing of trophy Giant Trevally. Fifteen minutes of fire that will last a lifetime in the memory bank.

The latter half of the trip succumbed to a fairly strong North wind. After a day of complete calm, where the guys tried some dredging and deep water fishing resulting in a few dogtooth tuna, the sea turned and showed us her true power. Boasting big, bashing swell and howling head winds. This did not get the team down. We fished hard, pushing days until last light and even giving the sunrise session a swing, which was rewarded with a bus Bohar snapper on the flat and some good predatory specimens off the boat.

Overall the team had a great trip with some special memories made. Unreal scenery, superb sightings and laughter all round. Our guests had plenty of shots at a variety of different species. Yet we were unlucky with a few of these encounters. Yet this is why we call our game fishing and not catching! We will return, with confidence and the shared burning fire inside fuelled by the fly fishing passion. Get the Dog!

Wild Sea Expedition

We are a small crew of young explorers who have been the first fishing through a number of areas over the Red Sea (Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti), the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean (Yemen, Somaliland) to discover places outside of the touristic route.
