Djibouti Week Number 5

Last year, a lively group of Italian and Spanish fishermen returned, along with one lone German, eager to relive the wild and unforgettable week we’d had the last time.

Once again, the weather proved challenging. We were met with a mix of calm, sweltering heat and a relentless north wind that not only made navigation difficult but also turned the sea into a challenging environment for fishing. Yet, despite these tough conditions, we managed to make the most of our opportunities, delivering some outstanding sessions with trophy-sized catches.

One thing I truly appreciate about fishing in Djibouti is how much effort you need to put in to earn a big fish. It’s never handed to you on a silver platter, but when that opportunity arises, you’d better be ready to seize it. And this trip, Marco—the sole German in the group—was on fire. He was hooking fish left and right, and we witnessed him land some impressive giant trevally, a few monster groupers, and even a near-miss with a big Napoleon wrasse that got away at the last moment.

To add a bit of fun and friendly competition to the week, we also held a small, lighthearted contest between friends for two hours. What started as a casual challenge turned into a blast, with everyone getting into the spirit. We ended up catching a variety of species, some of which I’d never seen before in Djibouti, adding an exciting element of discovery to the trip.

Overall, it was another week of tough but rewarding fishing, with plenty of laughs and unforgettable moments. And once again, it proved that when the conditions are tough, the best anglers are those who are patient, adaptable, and always ready for the next big strike.
