Protecting Socotra Through Responsible Tourism: Supporting Communities, Conserving Nature, and Building a Sustainable Future.
For more than 12 years, we have explored the mountains, coastlines, deserts, and remote fishing villages of Socotra. Our work on the island was always deeply connected to the sea, local communities, and the extraordinary natural environment that makes Socotra one of the most unique places on Earth. Today, our mission goes beyond organizing exceptional journeys. We believe tourism in Socotra should create lasting value for both visitors and local communities while helping preserve the fragile ecosystems that make this island so remarkable. At Wild Sea Expedition, we are committed to promoting responsible tourism in Socotra through practical projects that support environmental conservation, local livelihoods, and long-term community development.
A First Step Toward Positive Change. Over the past season, we launched the first phase of a long-term initiative designed to understand better the environmental and social challenges facing Socotra. Rather than starting with large-scale projects, we chose a simple and practical approach: listening, observing, and learning directly from local communities.
Fighting Plastic Pollution in Socotra.
One of the most urgent environmental challenges affecting Socotra is plastic waste. Despite its remote location in the Arabian Sea, large quantities of plastic are carried onto the island's shores by ocean currents. Over time, this waste accumulates on beaches, in fishing areas, and within coastal ecosystems that are critical to both wildlife and local communities. To address this issue, we launched a plastic collection program involving residents. Participants receive compensation based on the amount of plastic collected, creating an immediate incentive to remove waste from the environment while providing an additional source of income for families.
We recognize that financial incentives in environmental projects must be approached carefully. However, in the specific context of Socotra, we believe this model offers meaningful benefits while helping us better understand the scale of the problem. During the first season, more than 2 tons of plastic were removed from the island's environment. While this is only a modest beginning, the project provided valuable insights that will allow us to expand collection efforts significantly in the coming years. Our goal is to reach 15–20 tons of plastic removed annually through a structured and sustainable collection network.
Supporting Local Communities: Environmental protection and community development cannot be separated.
A sustainable future for Socotra depends on creating opportunities for local people while preserving the island's natural heritage. Through our work on the island, we have seen the need for greater access to education, technical skills, healthcare resources, and professional training. In a place that remains largely isolated from the outside world for several months each year, local capacity is essential. Communities need trained mechanics, healthcare professionals, skilled technicians, and future leaders who can contribute directly to the well-being of the island. Our long-term vision is to support initiatives that strengthen local resilience, improve self-sufficiency, and create meaningful opportunities for future generations.
Tourism as a Force for Conservation.
We believe tourism can be one of the most effective tools for protecting Socotra when managed responsibly. Every traveler who visits the island has the opportunity to contribute to its preservation by supporting local guides, community-run services, conservation initiatives, and sustainable economic development. Our goal is not to increase tourism at any cost. Instead, we aim to promote a model of low-impact, high-value travel that respects local culture, protects fragile ecosystems, and delivers tangible benefits to the people who call Socotra home.
Our Vision for the Future: The projects we are developing are not built on grand promises.
They are built on practical actions, local partnerships, and a long-term commitment to Socotra. We believe meaningful change begins with small steps, consistent effort, and a genuine understanding of the realities faced by local communities. The spark has been lit. We hope that the seeds we plant today will grow into stronger communities, healthier ecosystems, and a sustainable future for one of the most extraordinary islands on the planet.
