DJIBOUTI: POPPING

ABOUT DJIBOUTI

FISHING & SEASON

Fishing in Djibouti is undoubtedly one of the last frontiers for fanatic Gt hunters. Despite it being quite easy to reach, the sea still hasn’t been exploited because of the total absence of human structure on the coastline, making. This place is really unique and pristine.

What makes Djibouti an excellent place for fishing is the strategic position between the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, making the sea extremely rich in nutrients, current, and passage of pelagic between the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Wild Sea Expedition is proud to be the first operator to offer a liveaboard trip, in order to visit the main spots for fishing in Djibouti, and have the flexibility to change areas in accordance with weather conditions and fishing conditions.

The main spots we can fish during a liveaboard are the strait of Goubet, Mucha and Maskali Islands, and the Seven Brothers.

Having a proper motherboard in this area will be a game changer cause it will allow us to fish the best spots in the best way.

FISHING & SPOTS

THE STRAIT OF GOUBET

This is absolutely one of the craziest and most spectacular spots in the world for popping. It’s a small channel between two seas, with a small island in the middle, and since the place is very tidal, the current can be really unbelievable and you will think of fishing in a river, without mentioning the fighting in such a mass of water.

Here we will find GT also in big size, there are pelagic such as huge Mahi Mahi and Kingfish and Sailfish. Light tackle is very productive in some spots around the area for various reef species and Pelagic. An absolute highlight here is popping in the night when conditions allow it.

THE SEVEN BROTHERS

The Seven Brothers are one of the best spots in the world for shore fishing for GT, because of the very good shape of the coast, it's very flat and easy to wade.

They gained a reputation amongst the popping anglers for big GT from the boat, but we really think the big deal here is to target big fish off the rocks.

In addition we can also target big Queenfish on ultra-light, tackle.

TECHNIQUE & EQUIPMENT

Popping

On poppers, it's possible to hook GTs, Red Snapper, different kinds of Grouper and Emperor, big Barracuda, Spanish Mackerel, Sailfish, Mahi Mahi. It’s also very important to have a lighter rod to target Pelagic and reef species such as Grouper, Napoleons, and anything else.

ROD: you will need a 100-180 gr rod for PE8-10 and a 60-120 gr rod with PE4-5 for lighter popping.

REELS: for heavy popping Stella 10000 FA, 18000 SW or Saltiga 6000, for light popping Stella 8000 FA, Stella 10000 SW and Saltiga 4500

LINE AND LEADER: for heavy popping 80-100 lb braid and 150-170  lb shock leader, for light popping a 60 lb line with a 100-120 lb leader works well.

LURES: Popper from 70 gr to 130 gr, floating stick bait 15 to 24 cm, and sinking stick bait from 80 to 120 gr.

TERMINAL TACKLE: as a hook, we recommend BKK Raptor 3/0, 4/0, 5/0 and GT Rex 5/0, Viper 1/0, 2/0, 3/0 for light tackle, and BKK Crusader as a single hook.

As a split ring, we recommend  BKK 51 size 7 to 9.

Jigging

Jigging can be really productive, we usually don’t jig very deep, from 30 to 50 mt, in very heavy currents, where you need very heavy jigs to reach the bottom. On jigging it is possible to hook huge Gt.

ROD: the best is to get two rods, one in the 300 gr range, and more important is a good equipment to fight with submarines, a powerful rod for 400-500 gr with PE 6.

REELS: on the medium rod is possible to use a medium reel like Shimano Stella SW 10000 or other reels of the same size, or conventional reels with a high retrieve ratio. On the powerful rod, you will need a Stella 20000 SW or 18000 SW for speed jigging.

LINE: for medium jigging a PE4 line, for heavy tackle, Sea the best option is a PE 6

JIG: the ‘must have’ jigs are the Williamson Benthos, river to sea Sea Rock, Hooker from Seven Seas, Hots Y2, and Maria Deep Sea Flower. Size from 180 to 500 gr.

TERMINAL TACKLE: There are many hooks on the market, but we recommend BKK Deep and BKK SF.

Shore fishing and light tackle

Djibouti and especially the Seven Brothers archipelago is probably the best place in the world for heavy shore fishing, dedicated to Gt and other species like Barracuda, Snappers, and Triggerfish, and we had the chance to cast on Sailfish and other pelagics from shore. The shape of the rocky coast makes the place very easy to wade and fish, you just need sporting shoes and a backpack to carry a few lures, a leader, and water.

Light casting from rocks is possible for monster Triggerfish and Emperors

For light casting, we have some spots where we can target big Queenfish from the shore, plus small Gt, Mangrove Jack, and Barracuda at the mouth of some big Mangroves lagoon.

In some spots, it is also possible to cast for big Mahi Mahi and other bluewater species.

TACKLE: we suggest the same equipment for heavy popping to target GT from the shore. For light casting, a rod for PE2 with a good 30-40 Lb line and some small lures ( minnows and topwater) will do the job.

Fishing in Djibouti is undoubtedly one of the last frontiers for fanatic Gt hunters.
